What pets are eligible for Safeco Pet Insurance?
Safeco Pet Insurance is available for cats and dogs that are at least eight weeks old. There is no upper age limit for enrollment, though premiums may vary based on your pet’s age and breed. You do not need to be a current Safeco customer to enroll.
Is there a waiting period before coverage begins?
Yes. All Safeco Pet Insurance policies are subject to a 14-day waiting period from the effective date of the policy. Conditions that arise during the waiting period may not be covered. This is why it’s important to enroll your pet while they are healthy, before any issues arise.
Does pet insurance cover pre-existing conditions?
Pre-existing conditions — illnesses or injuries that existed before your policy’s effective date or waiting period — are typically excluded. This is one of the strongest reasons to enroll your pet when they’re young and healthy, before any conditions develop that could become exclusions.
How does the reimbursement process work?
You pay your veterinarian at the time of service, then submit a claim with your itemized invoice. Safeco reimburses you at your chosen reimbursement percentage (70%, 80%, or 90%) of eligible charges, after your annual deductible has been met. Most claims are processed within a few business days.
What’s the difference between Accident & Illness and Wellness coverage?
Accident and Illness coverage handles unexpected events — injuries, illnesses, hereditary conditions. Wellness coverage is an add-on that pays fixed amounts for preventive care like annual exams, vaccinations, dental cleanings, and flea prevention. Wellness benefits are not subject to your deductible or annual maximum, making them easier to use regularly.
Can I insure multiple pets?
Yes. Safeco offers discounts for insuring multiple pets. Each pet has their own policy with their own annual limit, deductible, and reimbursement selections. You can mix and match coverage levels to match each pet’s age, breed, and health history.
